What is Equine Thermography?

Equine thermography is a procedure that assesses the physiological changes in horses through the use of a thermal infrared camera. A thermal camera detects minute changes in temperatures and displays the various temperatures as a digital image on its screen. The digital images expose areas emitting hot and cold temperatures, which indicate problems such as arthritis, ligament damage, and nerve damage in horses. An infrared horse exam is a powerful diagnostic tool that can be used to detect a number of abnormalities common to horses before they can be visually identified.

How can horse owners benefit from Equine Thermography?

Equine thermography, or veterinary thermal imaging, is a non-invasive method of detecting injuries and other health issues in horses. Some ailments are not evident in a typical horse exam, and necessary treatment is not performed because of the lack of information. Horse thermography provides the horse owner with a detailed account of all current physical problems, including musculo-skeletal injuries which cannot be detected visually until the injury is two to three weeks old. Owners can use veterinary imaging results to determine a treatment plan before an injury or illness causes irreversible damage to the horse. The thermographer gives the owner a hard copy of the digital images, which the owner can save for comparison to future infrared horse exam reports.

What types of ailments can horse thermography detect?

Veterinary imaging can discover area of arthritis and injuries to ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves long before they would be detected visually. A horse thermography scan of the horse’s entire body and will reveal problems such as saddle bridging, uneven hoof balance, circulatory troubles, limb lameness, and body asymmetries.
